2009 Tern Nesting Notice

          ATTENTION

This notice is to remind you that Terns can and have recently nested on barges

in the Long Beach Harbor

Suitable nesting habitat for these birds can be: sand, gravel, dirt, rust, seashells

or any combination of debris.

The breeding season for Terns is from

March through September

.

As a reminder: Disturbing or harassing nesting birds (including moving the barge before

nesting is completed) violates State and Federal wildlife laws.

TO PREVENT BIRD NESTING:

  Inspect barges for suitable nesting habitat

  Clean inactive barges using Port approved methods

  Install aversion effigies (“scarecrows”) to discourage birds (example below)
